  • St. Elmo is a classic dive bar. The drinks are cheap, the people are tough and the music is always a little too loud. Located on the Brewery Gulch, St. Elmo first opened its doors in 1902 and has had a long run as a rough and tough place. Today its vibe has mellowed and it stands as one of the best places in Bisbee to get to know the locals.

  • Bisbee is a treasure of a town, seeped in rich history and filled with characters. It’s Main Street was at one time filled with miners and their families. As the mine closed in 1974 and mining families moved out, artists begin moving in. Now Bisbee is filled with retirees, artists and quirky characters that give the town its free spirit vibe. Main Street’s shops and restaurants are as diverse as its residents. Whether it’s a vegan lunch of butternut-red lentil soup at POCO or a hand-crafted Panama hat from Optimo Hatworks or a work of fine art from SAM•POE Gallery, Bisbee’s Main Street offers it all.

  • No two rooms or suites are alike at the Bisbee Grand Hotel Bed and Breakfast and none are as grand as the Victorian Suite with its red velvet canopied, four poster bed, chandelier and antique claw foot bathtub. Located on Main Street, the Bisbee Grand is a landmark, constructed in 1906 and restored in 1986. The hotel features a Western Saloon bar, which adds a little extra "ambience" for the rooms located directly upstairs from the bar.

  • The Courthouse Plaza Miners’ monument pays tribute to Bisbee’s long history with copper. The statue, which stands nine feet tall and weighs 2,000 pounds, is made of concrete, but uses 200 pounds of copper wire fed through an oxyacetylene heated gun and sprayed over the cement. The statue was created in 1935 by artist Phillips Sanderson.

  • Sonny Tovar was born in Bisbee in 1935. He was 40 years old when the Queen Mine closed. He is now one of several retired miners who give daily tours of the mine. He says he still loves the smell of the mine. "I enjoy the tours. I knew what I was talking about. I would put my heart into it. I felt proud to be a miner."

  • Poe Dismuke is a big ol' kid and he's having more fun than all of us. He sketches, sculpts, designs Rube Goldberg machines and builds soap-box-derby cars. He is a collector of the coolest crap you've ever seen, including a fuselage. As if that wasn't enough, he's married to the amazing Sam Woolcott. Together they own Sam Poe Gallery, located on Main Street in Bisbee.

  • Even Sam Woolcott will admit she scored the best studio at Central School Project, a non-profit creative space for working artists. The corner room with its endless windows and high ceilings make even a non-artist want to pick up a brush and give painting a try. For Woolcott, a mixed media artist originally from the East Coast, the natural light and the cool afternoon breezes are the perfect recipe for working on her latest project — Bisbee homes sketched from below. This most recent project, brought Woolcott out of her studio and onto the streets...well actually, into the drainage ditches. Armed with a sketchbook, Woollcott can be found laying or sitting in the town ditches, looking up at pedestrian bridges, walkways and houses of Bisbee. An architecture student in her earlier life, Woolcott has found a way to bridge her love of lines and angles with her passion for paint, color and textures.

  • Art Herman’s studio is located in a small dark room behind a gallery space in a converted garage on Main Street. He walks with a cane due to a bad back, most likely from years of hard labor working as a commercial diver, a carpenter, an electrician and a plumber. He works with his hands, always has. As a full-time artist, Herman is putting those hands to work sculpting wood and bending metals and found objects. His most recent project is a personal one. Herman, a kind and soft spoken man, is entering a new chapter in his life as an artist and his political views are a big part of that. His latest work — wood sculptures of crows — is a statement against Nevada's open season hunting of crows, which he affectionately calls “little darlings.” This new found activism doesn’t seem like a stretch for a man man who discovered his passion for art while stationed in San Francisco during the 60s at the height of the Beat Movement.
